About this release

STAAD.Pro is one of the long standing structural analysis packages, and the CONNECT Edition line is the version most offices settled on. You build a three dimensional model of the frame, define the material and section properties, apply supports and releases, define the load cases and combinations, and then run the analysis. What comes back is the full set of forces, moments, displacements and reactions for every member and node in the model.

The design side is what turns analysis results into something you can build from. Steel, concrete, timber and aluminium members are checked against a very wide set of national and international design codes, with the code checks run member by member and the failures reported with the governing clause and the utilisation ratio. Sections can be optimised automatically against a chosen code, which turns a first pass model into a sensible one in a single run.

Around the solver sits a great deal of practical tooling. There is a modelling environment with parametric structure generation for common frame types, a full text based input language for people who prefer to write the model directly, load generation for wind, seismic and moving loads according to code, and a report builder that assembles the calculation output into something a checker can follow. Model exchange with the wider building modelling formats means the geometry does not have to be built twice.

Installation notes

Follow these in order. Most reports of a failed install come from skipping a step rather than from the package itself.

  1. Remove any earlier installation of the same line before you start.
  2. Disconnect from the network.
  3. Extract the archive to a short path such as C:\Setup.
  4. Run setup as administrator and let the prerequisite components install first.
  5. Complete the main install without interrupting it, then launch once.
  6. Close the application and reconnect to the network.

Things worth knowing

  • The solver writes large scratch files during a run, keep the working folder on a drive with room to spare.
  • Results are only as good as the model, and the software will happily analyse a structure that is restrained wrongly without complaining.
  • Design output is an engineering aid and still needs a competent engineer to review it before anything gets built.

Which design codes are included?
The library covers a wide set of national and international codes for all four material types. The code selection is made per design run, not per model.
Can I import geometry rather than modelling it?
Yes, the common structural and building exchange formats import as analytical geometry, though supports and releases usually still need setting by hand.
How large a model can it handle?
Tens of thousands of elements is routine on a well specified machine. Beyond that the limiting factor is memory rather than the solver.
Is the text input still supported?
Yes, and many long term users work that way entirely. The graphical environment and the text file are two views of the same model.
