Request a title

If something is not in the index, post it here. Requests are counted per title, and the count is the main thing that decides what gets catalogued next.

Requests naming a specific edition or version are easier to fill correctly than requests naming only a product.

How requests are handled

Every request is filed and counted against the title it names. A title asked for once sits in the list. A title asked for by twenty people moves to the top of it. That is the whole mechanism, and it is why posting a request for something already requested is worth doing rather than a waste of time.

Requests that name an edition and a version get filled faster and more accurately, because most of the delay in cataloguing a title is working out which of several similar packages was actually being asked for.

What does not get filled

  • Requests for something already in the index, which is worth searching for first.
  • Requests naming a product so vaguely that it cannot be identified.
  • Requests for anything outside desktop software, which is all this index covers.

After a request is filled

New entries appear in the library the same way as everything else, with the full field set, the install notes and the mirror status. Nobody is notified individually, since nothing here keeps a list of who asked for what beyond the count itself. Watching the front page is the way to catch a new entry.
