About this release
ArcGIS Pro is the desktop application at the centre of the wider platform, and it is where the actual work of building and analysing spatial data happens. A project holds maps, scenes, layouts, toolboxes and data connections together in one place, and you move between a flat map and a three dimensional scene of the same data without leaving the application or converting anything. Ribbons across the top change with what you have selected, which takes a little adjustment coming from the older generation of the software and then stops being noticeable.
The analysis side is enormous. Overlay and proximity operations, surface and terrain analysis, network routing and service areas, interpolation, density surfaces, suitability modelling, image classification and change detection over raster time series, and space time pattern mining for data that has both a location and a clock attached. Everything is exposed as a geoprocessing tool with a consistent interface, and tools chain together in a visual model builder or from a scripting environment for anything that needs to run repeatedly.
Data handling is deliberately broad because spatial data arrives in whatever format someone had to hand. Feature classes, shapefiles, coverages, rasters in dozens of formats, point clouds, terrain surfaces, tabular data with coordinates in it, live database connections and web service layers all come into the same map. Cartography is treated seriously at the other end, with layout composition, symbol libraries, labelling engines with real placement rules, and export to print, screen and interactive delivery.

Installation notes
Follow these in order. Most reports of a failed install come from skipping a step rather than from the package itself.
- Remove any earlier version of the application before you begin.
- Disconnect from the network.
- Extract the archive to a short path such as C:\Setup.
- Run setup as administrator and allow the prerequisite runtime to install.
- Complete the install, then launch the application once and let it build its profile.
- Close it and reconnect to the network.

Things worth knowing
- Set the project and scratch workspace to a fast drive, geoprocessing writes a great deal of intermediate data.
- Three dimensional scenes lean heavily on the graphics card, integrated graphics will manage but not comfortably.
- Extensions are enabled per project, if a tool is greyed out check the extension state before assuming it is missing.
