About this release

SketchUp earned its place by making 3D modelling feel like drawing. Draw a rectangle, push it into a box, pull a face where you want a wing, and a building massing exists in a couple of minutes. That speed is why it dominates early design, where the model has to keep up with the conversation rather than the other way round.

The professional tier is what makes it usable beyond concept work. LayOut turns a model into a proper drawing set, with viewports linked to scenes, dimensions, annotation, title blocks and multi page documents that update when the model changes. Solid tools handle boolean operations, and the import and export format list covers DWG, DXF, IFC, OBJ, FBX, STL and 3DS so the model can move into whatever the rest of the team uses.

The extension ecosystem fills the remaining gaps and is the real reason experienced users stay. Rendering, parametric components, terrain, structural detailing and quantity takeoff are all available as extensions from the warehouse, and the component and material libraries mean most of a scene can be assembled from existing content rather than modelled from scratch.

Installation notes

Follow these in order. Most reports of a failed install come from skipping a step rather than from the package itself.

1. Disconnect from the network.
2. Extract to a short path such as C:\Setup.
3. Run the installer as administrator.
4. Apply the included licensing step before launching.
5. Open the application once and pick a template unit system.
6. Reconnect if you want warehouse access.

System requirements

Things worth knowing

• Single thread processor speed affects it more than core count, keep that in mind when choosing hardware.
• Purge unused components regularly, files bloat quickly when you import from the warehouse.
• The extension warehouse needs a connection, but installed extensions work offline afterwards.
