About this release

Revit works on a different premise from a drafting application. You model the building once, with walls that know they are walls and doors that know which wall they sit in, and every plan, section, elevation, detail and schedule is a live view onto that single model. Move a wall and every drawing that shows it updates, because they were never separate drawings.

That premise is what makes it the coordination tool on large projects. Architecture, structure and building services all model into linked files, clashes get caught in the model instead of on site, and quantities come straight out as schedules rather than being counted by hand. Worksharing lets a team work in one model at once, with a central file and local copies syncing changes.

The disciplines are all in one application here. Architectural modelling with walls, floors, roofs, stairs and curtain systems, structural modelling with framing, foundations and reinforcement, and building services with ducts, pipes, cable trays and electrical systems including flow and sizing calculations. The family editor covers everything the libraries do not, letting you build parametric components with your own dimensional rules.

Installation notes

Follow these in order. Most reports of a failed install come from skipping a step rather than from the package itself.

1. Disconnect from the network before you begin.
2. Pause real time protection.
3. Extract to a short path, the package is large and deep paths will fail.
4. Run setup as administrator and select the content libraries you need.
5. Apply the included licensing step before the first launch.
6. Launch once offline and set your template defaults.

System requirements

Things worth knowing

• Block the licensing service in your firewall or startup will hang while it tries to reach out.
• Model performance depends far more on how the model is built than on hardware, keep views and links disciplined.
• Files saved in this version cannot be opened in an older release, export to IFC if a consultant is behind.
