About this release

V-Ray is the renderer a large part of the architecture and product visualisation world runs on, and this is the build that plugs into 3ds Max. It replaces the host renderer with a physically based engine that treats light the way light behaves, so global illumination, reflections, refraction and the falloff of a real light source come out believable without a stack of fake fill lights propping up the scene.

The material system is the part that keeps people on it. The main V-Ray material covers metal, glass, plastic, liquid and layered surfaces with physically grounded controls, and there is a large library of ready materials to start from. Camera controls model a real lens with exposure, depth of field and motion blur, and the light types cover everything from a soft area light to a full physical sky and sun.

It gives you two engines from the same scene. The CPU engine is the reference path, and the GPU engine renders the same materials and lights on the graphics card for a large speed jump on suitable hardware, with an interactive mode that updates the image as you move things. A distributed mode spreads a heavy frame across several machines, which is how studios turn an overnight render into something quicker.

What it does

  • Physically based rendering engine that replaces the host renderer in 3ds Max
  • CPU and GPU rendering paths from the same scene
  • Interactive rendering that updates the image live as you work
  • Deep V-Ray material system with a large ready material library
  • Physical camera with exposure, depth of field and motion blur
  • Full light set including area lights and a physical sky and sun
  • Distributed rendering across several machines on a network
  • Denoiser for cleaning up a render at lower sample counts
  • Render elements for compositing control in post
  • Proxy geometry and scene management for very heavy scenes

Changes in this version

  • Faster GPU engine on recent graphics cards
  • Improved denoiser quality at low sample counts
  • Reworked material library with more ready presets
  • Better interactive rendering responsiveness on large scenes
  • Refreshed light and camera defaults for cleaner starting results

What the package contains

  • Chaos V-Ray for 3ds Max full offline installer
  • V-Ray material library
  • Host integration for supported 3ds Max versions
  • Denoiser and distributed rendering components
  • Readme with the install order written out step by step

Installation notes

Follow these in order. Most reports of a failed install come from skipping a step rather than from the package itself.

  1. Close 3ds Max completely before you begin.
  2. Disconnect from the network and pause real time protection.
  3. Run the installer as administrator and select your 3ds Max version.
  4. Apply the included activation step before launching the host.
  5. Open 3ds Max and set V-Ray as the active renderer, then reconnect.
  6. If it does not appear, check the plug-in path points at the V-Ray folder.

System requirements

Operating systemWindows 10 version 22H2 or Windows 11
ProcessorMulti core 64-bit processor, more cores speed the CPU engine
Memory16 GB minimum, 32 GB or more for heavy scenes
GraphicsCUDA or RTX capable GPU with 8 GB VRAM for the GPU engine
Storage4 GB free during install
HostA supported 3ds Max version already installed

Things worth knowing

  • This is a renderer plug-in, it needs a matching 3ds Max install to do anything.
  • The GPU engine wants a capable card with plenty of VRAM, a small card falls back or runs out of memory on big scenes.
  • Match the V-Ray build to your exact 3ds Max version, a mismatched host will not load the plug-in.

Questions about this title

Does this work on its own?
No. It is a renderer that plugs into 3ds Max. Without a supported 3ds Max install there is nothing to load it into.
What is the difference between the CPU and GPU engines?
The CPU engine is the reference path and handles everything. The GPU engine renders the same scene on the graphics card, usually much faster, on suitable hardware.
Do I need it for other 3D applications?
This build is specific to 3ds Max. Chaos ships separate V-Ray builds for other host applications.
Why is the plug-in missing after install?
Almost always a version mismatch or a plug-in path issue. Confirm the V-Ray build matches your 3ds Max version and that 3ds Max is looking in the V-Ray folder.
