About this release

Blender is the rare tool that covers the whole 3D pipeline in one place and gives it away. Modelling, sculpting, retopology, UV unwrapping, texture painting, rigging, animation, particle and physics simulation, two production renderers and a node based compositor all live under the same window. A shot can be built, lit, rendered and finished without a single handoff to another application.

The rendering side is the part most people arrive for. Cycles is a physically based path tracer with GPU acceleration across the common card vendors, and Eevee Next is a real time rasteriser that has closed most of the gap to the path tracer for look development and many final frames. Both read the same shader node graph, so you can block out a look in real time and send it to the path tracer for the final pass.

Around the core sit the parts that make it a real production tool. The geometry nodes system builds procedural models and scattering setups that update live, the grease pencil turns the 3D viewport into a 2D animation surface, and the Python API means almost everything can be scripted or extended with an add on. The 5.2 build here is the full desktop package with the complete add on set enabled from first launch.

What it does

  • Full modelling toolset with modifiers, boolean operations and non destructive editing
  • Sculpting with dynamic topology, multiresolution and a full brush library
  • Cycles physically based path tracer with GPU acceleration
  • Eevee Next real time renderer sharing the same shader graph
  • Geometry nodes for procedural modelling and scattering that updates live
  • Full rigging and animation with an nonlinear action editor and constraints
  • Physics simulation for cloth, fluid, smoke, rigid bodies and hair
  • Grease pencil for 2D animation drawn directly in the 3D viewport
  • Node based compositor for finishing renders inside the application
  • Python scripting API with a large ecosystem of community add ons

Changes in this version

  • Faster Cycles GPU rendering on current generation cards
  • Eevee Next improvements to shadow quality and light leaking
  • Reworked geometry nodes interface with clearer socket handling
  • Better viewport performance on scenes with heavy instancing
  • Updated default theme and improved high DPI scaling

What the package contains

  • Blender 5.2.0 full installer
  • Complete bundled add on set enabled from first launch
  • Default asset, brush and matcap libraries
  • All interface languages, selectable in preferences
  • Readme with the install order written out step by step

Installation notes

Follow these in order. Most reports of a failed install come from skipping a step rather than from the package itself.

  1. No special preparation is needed, the package is self contained.
  2. Extract the archive to any folder you like, or run the installer.
  3. If you extracted the portable build, run the executable directly.
  4. Set your GPU render device in preferences under system on first launch.
  5. Pick your interface language in preferences if you want a change.
  6. Save your startup file once you have the layout you like.

System requirements

Operating systemWindows 10 or Windows 11, 64-bit
Processor64-bit quad core, eight cores or more recommended
Memory8 GB minimum, 32 GB for heavy simulation and sculpting
GraphicsGPU with 4 GB VRAM, 8 GB or more for GPU rendering
Storage1 GB for the install plus project space
Display1920 by 1080 or larger

Things worth knowing

  • Set the render device to your GPU in preferences, it defaults to the processor and is much slower there.
  • The portable build keeps its configuration next to the executable, which is handy for a USB stick.
  • Add ons from an older major version sometimes need updating, check them after a jump like this one.

Questions about this title

Is it really free for commercial work?
Yes. Blender is open source under the GNU GPL, and anything you create with it is yours to use commercially with no seat cost.
Does GPU rendering work on my card?
Cycles supports the common vendors through their respective render backends. Set the device in preferences and pick the matching backend.
Will old files open?
Yes, Blender opens files from far older versions. Going back down a major version is not guaranteed, so keep a copy before upgrading a big project.
Portable or installer?
The portable build runs from a folder and keeps settings alongside it. The installer registers file associations. Both are the same application.
