About this release
Inventor is parametric mechanical design, the kind of CAD where a part is defined by dimensions and constraints rather than drawn as fixed geometry. You build a part from a feature history, a sketch extruded, holes placed, fillets added, and any of those features stays editable, so changing a dimension rebuilds the model rather than forcing a redraw. That is what makes it a product development tool rather than a drawing tool.
Assemblies are the reason it scales. Parts come together with mating constraints that describe how they fit and move, so a mechanism can be checked for motion and interference before anything is made. It handles large assemblies with the management tools to keep them workable, carries a content library of standard fasteners and fittings, and has dedicated design accelerators for common mechanical elements like bolted connections, gears and frames.
The Professional edition adds the analysis and the output. Stress analysis checks a part will hold under load, motion simulation studies a mechanism in movement, and the drawing environment produces the fully dimensioned, toleranced manufacturing drawings that a workshop builds from, all linked to the model so a change flows through to the drawing. It reads the interchange formats needed to work with parts from other CAD systems.

- Motion simulation for studying a mechanism in movement
- Fully dimensioned and toleranced manufacturing drawings linked to the model
- Sheet metal and weldment design environments
- Interchange import and export for working with other CAD systems
Changes in this version
- Faster large assembly performance and open times

- Standard content and fastener library
- Simulation and analysis components
- Selected interface languages, chosen during setup
- Readme with the install order written out step by step
Installation notes
Follow these in order. Most reports of a failed install come from skipping a step rather than from the package itself.
- Disconnect from the network before you start.
- Pause real time protection for the length of the install.
- Extract the archive to a short path such as C:\Setup.
- Run setup as administrator and choose the components you need.
- Let the installer finish, then launch the application once.
- Close it and reconnect the network.
System requirements
| Operating system | Windows 10 version 22H2 or Windows 11 |
| Processor | Multi core 64-bit processor, higher clock speed helps rebuilds |
| Memory | 16 GB minimum, 32 GB for large assemblies |
| Graphics | Professional or high end consumer GPU with 4 GB VRAM |
| Storage | 40 GB free during install plus project space |
| Display | 1920 by 1080 or larger |
Things worth knowing
- Large assemblies benefit from a fast single core clock as much as core count, rebuilds are sensitive to it.
- Keep a project file structure in place, Inventor tracks references between parts, drawings and assemblies.
- Parts from other CAD systems come in through interchange formats, which drop the editable feature history.
Questions about this title
What does parametric mean here?
Can it open files from another CAD system?
What does the Professional edition add?
Why are my rebuilds slow?
What people are saying
Big assembly opens quicker than the last year build. Drawing views generate faster too.
Design accelerators for bolted joints saved me the hand calc. Nice having it built in.
Drawings stay linked to the model so a change flows through. That is the whole reason I use it.
