About this release
3ds Max is a general purpose three dimensional package that design visualisation and games studios lean on heavily. Its strength is the modelling toolset and the modifier stack, a non destructive list of operations layered on top of an object that you can reorder, tweak or remove at any point. That stack is why an artist can rough out a form and keep refining it without ever committing to a destructive edit.
Modelling spans polygon, spline and parametric approaches, so hard surface work, organic sculpting through to a point, and procedural forms all live in the same scene. The material and map system feeds a physically based workflow, and the package ships with a capable renderer while also acting as the host for the major third party engines the industry uses. For architectural work, the scene handles large detailed environments without falling over.
Animation and rigging round it out. A full keyframe system, a curve editor, character rigging tools and a particle and dynamics system cover everything from a turntable of a product to a populated crowd. Scripting through the built in language lets a studio automate the repetitive parts of a pipeline, which is a large part of why it stays embedded in production houses.
What it does
- Non destructive modifier stack layered on every object
- Polygon, spline and parametric modelling in one scene
- Physically based material and map system
- Bundled renderer plus host support for the major third party engines
- Full keyframe animation with a curve editor
- Character rigging, skinning and animation tools
- Particle systems and dynamics for effects work
- Scene management that scales to large detailed environments
- Built in scripting language for pipeline automation
- Data exchange with the wider CAD and 3D ecosystem
Changes in this version
- Faster viewport performance on dense scenes
- Improved retopology tools for cleaning up imported meshes
- Reworked smart extrude behaviour on complex geometry
- Better material previewing in the viewport
- Updated exchange support for current interchange formats
What the package contains
- Autodesk 3ds Max 2027 full offline installer
- Bundled renderer and default material library
- Sample scenes and starter assets
- All interface languages, selectable during setup
- Readme with the install order written out step by step
Installation notes
Follow these in order. Most reports of a failed install come from skipping a step rather than from the package itself.
- Disconnect from the network before you start.
- Turn off real time protection for the duration of the install.
- Extract the archive to a short path such as C:\Setup.
- Run the installer as administrator and choose your components.
- Let the install finish, it is a large package, then launch once.
- Close the application and reconnect the network.
System requirements
| Operating system | Windows 10 version 22H2 or Windows 11 |
| Processor | Intel or AMD 64-bit multi core processor |
| Memory | 16 GB minimum, 32 GB or more recommended |
| Graphics | A professional or gaming GPU with 8 GB VRAM |
| Storage | 30 GB free for a full install |
| Display | 1920 by 1080 or larger |
Things worth knowing
- Install the graphics driver your GPU maker recommends for this application, the generic driver can cause viewport artefacts.
- Third party render engines install separately, the bundled renderer is there to get you started.
- Block the application in your firewall if you do not want it checking a licence state online.
Questions about this title
Can I use a third party renderer?
Will old scenes open?
Is this for games or architecture?
Does it need to stay online?
What people are saying
Modifier stack is still the reason I stay in this over anything else. Non destructive all the way down.
Handled a big architectural scene without choking. Viewport is quicker than the last build on the same card.
Scripting language let me automate the boring export steps for the whole team. That alone pays for keeping it around.
