About this release

Lightroom Classic is built around a catalogue rather than a folder of files, and that is the whole point of it. Import a shoot, flag and rate as you cull, develop the keepers, and export a set, with every edit stored as instructions against the original rather than baked into a new file. The raw file on disk is never modified.

The develop module carries the full raw pipeline. Exposure, tone curve, HSL, colour grading with separate shadow, midtone and highlight wheels, detail with noise reduction and sharpening, lens corrections from a large profile library, transform for perspective, and effects. Masking is where most of the work happens now, with subject, sky, background, object and person detection producing a mask you then refine by hand.

Volume handling is what separates it from the lighter tools. Presets and profiles apply on import, sync propagates a develop setting across hundreds of selected images, virtual copies let you keep alternate treatments without duplicating files, and the export module writes multiple sized and watermarked sets in one operation. Collections, smart collections and keyword hierarchies keep an archive of a hundred thousand frames navigable.

Installation notes

Follow these in order. Most reports of a failed install come from skipping a step rather than from the package itself.

  1. Disconnect from the network.
  2. Pause real time protection for the duration.
  3. Extract to a short path such as C:\Setup.
  4. Run setup as administrator and let it finish.
  5. Launch once so the catalogue location is created, then close it.
  6. Reconnect to the network.

System requirements

Operating systemWindows 10 version 22H2 or Windows 11

Things worth knowing

  • Keep the catalogue on a fast internal drive even when your images live on external storage.
  • Previews grow large over time, set a preview expiry so the cache does not run away.
  • Denoise writes a new file per image, so budget disk space before running it on a whole shoot.

Questions about this title

What is the difference from the cloud version?
Classic keeps your files where you put them and works entirely offline against a local catalogue. The cloud version syncs originals to a service, which is a different workflow.
Will it open an older catalogue?
Yes. It upgrades the catalogue and keeps the original file so you can go back to the previous version if needed.
Does denoise need a network connection?
No, it runs on the local GPU. Without a capable GPU it falls back to the processor and gets much slower.
Can I edit the same image in Photoshop?
Yes, edit in Photoshop hands off a rendered file and brings the result back into the catalogue stacked with the original.
