About this release

Topaz Photo AI folds the three image quality jobs that used to mean three separate tools, noise reduction, sharpening and enlargement, into a single window that works out what a given photo needs and applies the right models in the right order. You open an image, it analyses the problems, and it proposes a fix. For the common trio of a noisy high ISO frame, a slightly soft capture and a source that is smaller than the output, it handles all three in one pass.

The order matters, and getting it wrong by hand is how people used to ruin images, sharpening noise before removing it, or enlarging before cleaning. The tool sequences the models so noise comes out before detail is sharpened and before the image is enlarged, which is why the combined result tends to beat running the same steps separately. Each stage stays adjustable, with strength controls and a face specific recovery pass so portraits keep their detail.

It runs as a standalone application and as a plugin into the major editors, so it drops into an existing workflow or handles a batch of files on its own. The autopilot picks settings for each image, which makes a folder of mixed photos quick to process, and you can override any of it when a particular frame needs a firmer or gentler hand. Graphics card acceleration keeps the heavier passes fast.

What it does

  • Combined denoise, sharpen and enlarge in one window
  • Automatic analysis that proposes the fixes an image needs
  • Correct model ordering so noise is removed before sharpening and enlarging
  • Face specific recovery so portraits keep their detail
  • Per stage strength controls with manual override of the autopilot
  • Standalone application and plugin into the major editors
  • Batch processing of a folder with autopilot settings per image
  • Raw file support for processing before other edits
  • Graphics card acceleration for the heavier passes
  • Before and after comparison at full zoom

Changes in this version

  • Improved autopilot judgement on mixed content images
  • Faster processing on current generation graphics cards
  • Reworked denoise model with fewer artefacts on skin
  • Better face recovery at higher enlargement factors
  • Reduced memory use on large batch runs

What the package contains

  • Topaz Photo AI standalone installer
  • Plugin components for the major editors
  • Full trained model set
  • Example images for comparing the results
  • Readme with the install order written out step by step

Installation notes

Follow these in order. Most reports of a failed install come from skipping a step rather than from the package itself.

  1. Disconnect from the network before you start.
  2. Turn off real time protection for the duration.
  3. Extract to a short path such as C:\Setup and run the installer as administrator.
  4. Let it place the model files, which are the bulk of the install size.
  5. Launch once so the models register, then close it.
  6. Reconnect the network.

System requirements

Operating systemWindows 10 version 22H2 or Windows 11
ProcessorIntel or AMD 64-bit processor with AVX support
Memory8 GB minimum, 16 GB recommended
GraphicsA GPU with 4 GB VRAM for acceleration, 8 GB for large output
Storage5 GB free including the model files
Display1920 by 1080 or larger

Things worth knowing

  • Let the autopilot propose first, then adjust, it usually gets close and saves setting three stages by hand.
  • Without a capable graphics card it falls back to the processor and the heavier passes get much slower.
  • Ease off the strength when skin or fine texture starts to look artificial, the strongest setting is rarely the best.

Questions about this title

How is this different from Gigapixel?
Gigapixel is enlargement focused. Photo AI combines denoise, sharpen and enlarge and sequences them automatically, so it is the better fit when an image has more than one problem at once.
Why does the order of steps matter?
Sharpening noise before removing it, or enlarging before cleaning, bakes in problems. The tool runs the models in the order that avoids that, which is a large part of why the combined result looks better.
Does it run inside my editor?
Yes, as a plugin into the major editors, and also as a standalone application for batch work on a folder of files.
Does it need a network connection?
No. The models install locally, so the whole workflow runs offline once it is set up.
