About this release

Camtasia pairs a screen recorder with a timeline editor that is shaped specifically for instructional video. It is not trying to be a colour finishing suite or a broadcast editor, it is trying to make a clear walkthrough of software or a training module quick to record and quick to cut, and it is very good at exactly that.

The recorder captures the screen, the webcam and the system and microphone audio together, and drops them onto the timeline as separate tracks ready to edit. From there the tools are the ones a tutorial actually needs, cursor smoothing and click emphasis, zoom and pan to focus on a menu, callouts and annotations, and lower thirds, none of which require a motion graphics background to use.

The features that separate it from a general editor are the instructional ones. Interactive quizzes can be dropped into the timeline and reported on, a table of contents turns a long recording into a navigable lesson, and captions can be added and burned in or kept as a track. Export presets cover the common sharing destinations and local file delivery, so a finished lesson goes out without wrestling an encoder.

Installation notes

Follow these in order. Most reports of a failed install come from skipping a step rather than from the package itself.

1. Disconnect from the network before you begin.
2. Pause real time protection for the install.
3. Extract the archive to a short path such as C:\Setup.
4. Run setup as administrator and let it finish.
5. Apply the included licensing step before the first launch.
6. Open the application once, then reconnect to the network.

System requirements

Things worth knowing

• Record narration in a separate pass if you want the cleanest audio, live narration while recording the screen is harder to fix.
• Keep zoom and pan animations subtle, aggressive ones make a tutorial harder to follow rather than clearer.
• Export a small test clip first to confirm the preset before committing a long render.
