About this release

Resolume Arena is built for driving visuals live. The working surface is a grid of clips arranged in layers, and you trigger them, blend them, effect them and reorder them while everything is playing to an audience. Nothing is rendered out at the end because there is no end, the output is a live signal going to a projector, an LED processor or a screen, and every change you make is visible on it immediately.

The Arena edition adds the parts that matter once the output stops being a single flat rectangle. The projection mapping stage lets you carve the output into slices, warp each one onto whatever physical surface it is hitting, soft edge blend overlapping projectors into one continuous image, and mask off the bits that should not be lit. Once a venue is mapped, the mapping is saved with the composition and recalled instantly the next time you are in the same room.

Around the core sits everything a performance needs. An effect chain per clip, per layer and on the master, with parameters that can be linked to audio analysis, to a clock, or to physical controls over the common control protocols. Timeline synchronisation to an external clock keeps visuals locked to whatever is driving the show, and the whole thing accepts live camera input, screen capture and generative sources alongside prepared clips.

Installation notes

Follow these in order. Most reports of a failed install come from skipping a step rather than from the package itself.

  1. Disconnect from the network before you start.
  2. Extract the archive to a short path such as C:\Setup.
  3. Run setup as administrator and allow the codec components to install.
  4. Apply the included activation step before first launch.
  5. Launch it once, confirm your outputs are detected, then close it.
  6. Reconnect to the network.

Things worth knowing

  • Convert your clips to the performance optimised codec before a show, playing standard delivery codecs live is the usual cause of stutter.
  • Clip playback is disk bound, keep content on a fast internal drive rather than external storage during a performance.
  • Save the composition after mapping a venue, remapping from scratch on the night is not a situation you want to be in.

Questions about this title

Why is playback stuttering?
Almost always the clip codec. Delivery codecs are built for linear playback, not for random access triggering. Convert to the performance codec and it disappears.
How many outputs can it drive?
As many as your graphics hardware exposes. The mapping stage treats them as one canvas that you slice up however the venue requires.
Does it work with physical controllers?
Yes, the common control protocols used in live production are supported and any parameter can be mapped to a physical control.
Can it capture a live camera?
Yes, camera input, capture devices and screen capture all appear as clip sources alongside prepared media.
