About this release
This is the driver package for the Realtek high definition audio codec, the chip that provides the sound on the large majority of desktop and laptop mainboards. When a machine has crackling audio, missing output devices, jacks that are not detected, or no control panel to configure the speakers, a clean install of the proper driver is the fix, and it is far better than the generic audio driver the operating system falls back on.
The generic driver plays sound, but it is a lowest common denominator, it does not expose the jack retasking, the speaker configuration, the enhancements or the multi stream routing that the hardware actually supports. This package installs the full driver and its control panel, so the front panel jacks light up correctly, surround configurations work, and the per device settings are all available.
The package covers the range of Realtek codecs in current use, so it recognises the specific chip on the board and installs the matching driver rather than a one size guess. It is a signed driver package that installs cleanly and survives a reboot. On a machine where the audio has quietly degraded to the generic fallback, this restores it to what the hardware is meant to do.

- Covers the range of Realtek codecs in current use
- Restores proper audio where the generic driver falls short
- Both architecture builds in the same package
- Survives a reboot without reverting to the fallback driver
Changes in this version
- Updated codec support for recent mainboard revisions
- Fixed crackling on some configurations under load
- Improved jack detection reliability on front panel connectors
- Reworked control panel layout
- Better coexistence with third party audio enhancement software
What the package contains
- Realtek high definition audio driver package
- Control panel component
- Both architecture builds
- Readme with the install and clean up steps
- Notes on removing the previous driver first
Installation notes
Follow these in order. Most reports of a failed install come from skipping a step rather than from the package itself.
- Uninstall the previous audio driver from device manager and tick the option to remove its software.
- Reboot so the operating system falls back to the generic driver.
- Extract the archive to a folder you control.
- Run the installer as administrator and let it complete.
- Reboot again when prompted so the new driver takes over.
- Open the control panel and confirm the jacks and speakers are detected.

Things worth knowing
- Remove the old audio driver before installing this one, stacking drivers is the usual cause of a failed install.
- If the board does not use a Realtek codec, this package will not install, check the mainboard first.
- A reboot after install is not optional, the new driver only takes over on the restart.

Does it work if my board is not Realtek?
What people are saying
Front panel jack finally detected again after installing this. Generic driver never saw it.
Removed the old driver, rebooted, installed this, crackling gone. Do it in that order.
Got my speaker configuration back, generic driver only ever gave me plain stereo.
