Hard Disk Sentinel Pro

Pre-ActivatedHealth MonitorOffline InstallerVersion 6.40.332-bit and 64-bit

About this release

Hard Disk Sentinel watches the health of every drive in a machine by reading the diagnostic data the drives themselves report, and turning that raw data into a single health and performance figure a person can act on. The value is that a drive rarely fails without warning, the warning signs are in the diagnostics for weeks, and most people never look until it is too late. This looks continuously and tells you in plain terms.

It covers mechanical drives, solid state drives and external disks, and reads through most enclosures and controllers that pass the diagnostics through. For an SSD it tracks the wear the drive has accumulated and estimates remaining life, for a mechanical drive it watches for the reallocated sectors and errors that precede a failure, and for either it monitors temperature, which is a leading cause of shortened life.

The professional tier adds the parts that make it useful rather than just informative. It can run in the background as a service, alert by several methods when something crosses a threshold, and trigger a backup or a command automatically when a drive starts to degrade, so a warning turns into a saved dataset rather than a note you read after the fact.

What it does

  • Continuous health and performance monitoring for every drive
  • Failure prediction from the drives' own diagnostic data
  • Coverage of mechanical, solid state and external drives
  • SSD wear tracking with remaining life estimate
  • Temperature monitoring with configurable thresholds
  • Background service operation in the professional tier
  • Alerts by several methods when a threshold is crossed
  • Automatic backup or command trigger on degradation
  • Surface tests for reading and verifying the whole disk
  • Detailed reports on every drive's condition and history

Changes in this version

  • Improved reading through more external enclosures and controllers
  • Better SSD wear estimation on recent drive models
  • Faster surface test on large drives
  • Reworked alerting configuration
  • Reduced background resource use

What the package contains

  • Hard Disk Sentinel Pro offline installer
  • Background service component
  • Alerting and automatic action components
  • All interface languages
  • Readme with the install order written out step by step

Installation notes

Follow these in order. Most reports of a failed install come from skipping a step rather than from the package itself.

  1. Extract the archive to any folder.
  2. Run the installer and finish the wizard.
  3. Apply the included licensing step so the professional tier activates.
  4. Open the application and confirm the professional state.
  5. Set your temperature and health thresholds and the alert method.
  6. Leave it running in the background so it can watch continuously.

Things worth knowing

  • A falling health figure is a signal to move the data now, not later, that is the entire reason to run it.
  • Set the automatic backup trigger if the data matters, a warning nobody reads in time is worth little.
  • Some cheap USB enclosures block the diagnostics, if a drive shows no data the enclosure is usually why.

Questions about this title

Can it really predict a failure?
It reads the drive's own diagnostics, which usually show degradation well before a failure. It cannot catch a sudden electronic death, but the gradual failures it sees coming.
Does it work with SSDs?
Yes. For an SSD it tracks accumulated wear and estimates remaining life rather than watching for the mechanical faults a spinning disk has.
What does the pro tier add?
Background service operation, alerting and the automatic backup or command trigger. The lower tiers only show the information.
A drive shows no data, why?
It is usually behind a USB enclosure or controller that does not pass the diagnostics through. Connected directly it normally reads fine.
