About this release
Pinnacle Studio Ultimate is the top edition of a video editor that has been around long enough to have a settled character. It is more capable than the tools aimed at holiday footage and less demanding than the suites that assume a colourist and a sound engineer are somewhere down the corridor. The timeline takes as many video and audio tracks as you want to stack, every effect parameter can be keyframed, and the whole thing runs comfortably on hardware that would struggle with a professional suite.
The Ultimate edition is where the interesting tools live. Multicam editing synchronises up to six angles and lets you cut between them live during playback, motion tracking follows an object through a shot so a blur or a title can be pinned to it, and the keying tools handle green screen work with spill suppression and matte refinement. There is a colour grading panel with wheels, curves and scopes, video masking that follows a subject, and time remapping for speed ramps.
The screen recorder is built in rather than bolted on, which is the reason a lot of people pick this particular editor. It captures the display, a camera and system audio together, drops the result straight onto the timeline, and gets out of the way. Combined with the title editor, the transition library and the export presets for the common delivery targets, it covers the entire path from recording something to handing over a finished file without any other application being involved.

Installation notes
Follow these in order. Most reports of a failed install come from skipping a step rather than from the package itself.
- Disconnect from the network before you start.
- Pause real time protection for the duration of the install.
- Extract the archive to a short path such as C:\Setup.
- Run setup as administrator and let the content libraries install with it.
- Launch the application once so the media folders are created, then close it.
- Reconnect to the network.

Things worth knowing
- Set the render and capture folders to a fast drive with room before starting a project, the defaults land on the system partition.
- Long GOP 4K footage benefits enormously from proxies on modest hardware, they are generated from the timeline menu.
- Third party effect packs from earlier versions usually need reinstalling against this build.
Questions about this title
How does it compare to the professional suites?
Will projects from older versions open?
Is the screen recorder any good?
Does export use the graphics card?
What people are saying
Record the screen and cut it in the same application. That is the whole workflow and it just works.
Multicam on four angles synced from audio without any fiddling.
Runs fine on a laptop that chokes on the big suites. That is why I keep it.
