About this release

PowerDVD has been the answer to awkward playback for a very long time. Where the built in player refuses a file, an optical disc, or an audio format, this generally handles it without any codec hunting. The format list covers effectively every mainstream video and audio container, high resolution and lossless audio formats, and physical disc playback including the higher capacity formats that most software stopped supporting years ago.

Playback quality is the reason to choose it over a lightweight player. Hardware acceleration is used wherever the graphics hardware allows, so high bitrate material plays without dropping frames and without heating up the machine. On top of that sits an enhancement layer, upscaling that adds apparent detail rather than just stretching, colour and contrast enhancement, and audio processing that widens a stereo mix or maps a surround track sensibly onto whatever speakers you actually have.

Around playback there is a full media environment. A library that indexes video, music and photos across local folders and network shares, playback to and from other devices on the network, casting to a television, playlists, bookmarks and resume across sessions, and a viewer for high resolution and panoramic material. Subtitle handling is thorough, with external file loading, timing offset, appearance control and multiple track switching mid playback.

What it does

  • Playback of effectively every mainstream video and audio format
  • Physical disc playback including the higher capacity formats
  • Hardware accelerated decoding on current graphics hardware
  • Upscaling and enhancement processing for lower resolution material
  • High resolution and lossless audio support with passthrough to a receiver
  • Surround downmixing tuned to the speaker configuration you actually have
  • Media library indexing local folders and network shares
  • Playback to other devices on the network and casting to a television
  • Comprehensive subtitle handling with external files, offsets and styling
  • Bookmarks, playlists and resume position kept across sessions

Changes in this version

  • Improved hardware decode support on the current generation of graphics cards
  • Faster library indexing on large network shares
  • Reworked enhancement controls with a proper before and after toggle
  • Better subtitle rendering at high display resolutions
  • Fixed an audio passthrough dropout on some receiver configurations

What the package contains

  • CyberLink PowerDVD Ultra full offline installer
  • Complete codec and decoder set
  • Media library and network playback components
  • All interface languages, selectable during setup
  • Readme with the install order written out step by step

Installation notes

Follow these in order. Most reports of a failed install come from skipping a step rather than from the package itself.

  1. Disconnect from the network before you start.
  2. Pause real time protection for the duration of the install.
  3. Extract the archive to a short path such as C:\Setup.
  4. Run setup as administrator and let the codec components register.
  5. Apply the included activation step before first launch.
  6. Open it once, point the library at your media folders, then reconnect.

System requirements

Operating systemWindows 10 version 22H2 or Windows 11
ProcessorIntel or AMD 64-bit multi core processor
Memory4 GB minimum, 8 GB recommended
GraphicsGPU with hardware decode support and current drivers
Storage2 GB free during install
Display1920 by 1080 or larger, high resolution display supported

Things worth knowing

  • Audio passthrough needs the output device set correctly in both the player and Windows, a mismatch is the usual cause of silence.
  • The enhancement processing is a matter of taste, turn it off entirely if you want the material as it was mastered.
  • Disc playback requires a drive capable of reading the format, the software cannot work around missing hardware.

Questions about this title

Does it play formats the built in player refuses?
Yes, that is most of the reason people install it. The codec set is comprehensive and installs with the application rather than being hunted down separately.
Is the upscaling worth anything?
On lower resolution material shown on a large display, noticeably so. On material that is already high resolution it does very little.
Does it need a network connection?
No. Local playback, disc playback and the library all work entirely offline.
Can it send video to a television?
Yes, through casting to compatible devices on the same network, and through playback to other devices that accept a stream.
