Photoshop Elements is the version of Adobe's editor built for people who want good results from their photos without a professional's learning curve. It keeps the powerful core of the full application but wraps it in guided edits, step by step walkthroughs that hold your hand through a specific task, whether that is removing an object, replacing a dull sky or turning a photo into a stylised print.

It comes in two parts. The Organizer catalogues your whole photo collection, tagging faces and places automatically and building albums and searches so a picture from years ago is findable, and the Editor is where the retouching happens. Between them they cover the everyday jobs, fixing exposure and colour, removing blemishes and unwanted objects, combining several shots, and creating collages, slideshows and prints.

The automatic and assisted features do a lot of the heavy lifting. Subject selection, skin smoothing, background swaps and colourising an old black and white photo all run from a single action, and the artistic effects turn an ordinary snapshot into something to frame. It is a one time purchase rather than a subscription. The build here is the full version with the Organizer, Editor and every guided edit included.

Installation notes

Follow these in order. Most reports of a failed install come from skipping a step rather than from the package itself.

1. Disconnect from the network before you start.
2. Pause real time protection for the length of the install.
3. Extract the archive to a short path such as C:\Setup.
4. Run setup as administrator and pick your interface language.
5. Let the installer finish, then open the application once.
6. Close it and reconnect to the network.
