About this release

Fresco is Adobe's drawing and painting application built from the start for a pen and a touch screen rather than a mouse, and its trick is holding three kinds of media in one canvas. Vector brushes stay crisp and scalable, pixel brushes give the texture and grit of raster painting, including the full Photoshop brush engine, and the live media brushes simulate watercolour and oil that actually bleed, pool and blend on the canvas the way wet paint behaves.

That live media is the headline. A wet watercolour stroke spreads into a damp area and softens at the edges, oil builds up thick and smears when a dry brush drags through it, and colours mix on the canvas rather than only in a picker. For an illustrator who wants the feel of traditional media with the undo button and the layers of a digital tool, it is a genuinely different experience from a plain raster painter.

Around the painting sit the expected tools, layers with masks and blend modes, selections, a symmetry and perspective guide system, time lapse recording of a piece as you make it, and a motion feature for simple frame animation. It shares brushes and files with the rest of the Adobe lineup, so a piece started here moves into Photoshop cleanly. This is the desktop build prepared to install in an activated state.

What it does

  • Vector brushes that stay crisp and scalable
  • Pixel brushes with the full Photoshop brush engine
  • Live watercolour that bleeds, pools and softens on the canvas
  • Live oil that builds thick and smears with a dry brush
  • Colours that mix on the canvas rather than only in a picker
  • Layers with masks and blend modes
  • Selection tools and a symmetry and perspective guide system
  • Time lapse recording of a piece as you paint it
  • Simple frame animation for short motion pieces
  • Brush and file sharing with the rest of the Adobe lineup

  • Adobe Fresco desktop offline installer

Installation notes

Follow these in order. Most reports of a failed install come from skipping a step rather than from the package itself.

  1. Disconnect from the network before you start.
  2. Extract the archive to a short path such as C:\Setup.
  3. Run setup as administrator and let it complete.
  4. Apply the included activation step, then launch once and close it.
  5. Confirm your pen or tablet is recognised in the canvas.
  6. Reconnect to the network.

System requirements

Operating systemWindows 10 version 22H2 or Windows 11
ProcessorIntel or AMD 64-bit processor
Memory8 GB minimum, 16 GB recommended
GraphicsGPU with 2 GB VRAM and pen or touch support
Storage5 GB free during install
DisplayA pen or touch display gets the most out of it

Things worth knowing

  • It is built for a pen, a mouse works but misses most of what makes the live media worthwhile.
  • Live media brushes lean on the GPU, an older card slows the bleeding and blending down.
  • Files and brushes share with Photoshop, so start here and finish there if you want.

Questions about this title

Do I need a pen display?
Not strictly, but the application is built around pressure and touch. On a plain mouse the live watercolour and oil lose most of their point.
What are live media brushes?
Watercolour and oil that behave like real paint, bleeding, pooling and smearing on the canvas rather than laying down a flat stroke.
Does it work with Photoshop?
Yes, it shares brushes and files, so a piece started in Fresco opens in Photoshop cleanly to finish.
Can it do vector and raster?
Yes, both in one canvas. Vector brushes stay crisp while pixel brushes give raster texture, alongside the live media.
