About this release

InDesign is the layout application for documents with structure. A single poster can be built anywhere, but a two hundred page catalogue with running heads, sections, a table of contents, an index and a consistent type system needs the machinery this application provides.

That machinery is styles and masters. Parent pages carry the repeating furniture, paragraph and character styles carry every typographic decision, object styles carry frame formatting, and changing a style updates every instance in the document at once. Text threads across frames and pages so adding a paragraph on page four pushes everything correctly through to the end.

Production is the other half. Preflight runs continuously and flags a missing link, an overset frame or an image below your resolution threshold as it happens rather than at export. Packaging collects the document, every linked asset and every font into a folder ready for handoff. Export covers print ready PDF with bleed and marks, interactive PDF, and reflowable and fixed layout EPUB from the same source document.

Installation notes

Follow these in order. Most reports of a failed install come from skipping a step rather than from the package itself.

1. Disconnect from the network.
2. Pause real time protection.
3. Extract to a short path such as C:\Setup.
4. Run setup as administrator, pick a language, and let it finish.
5. Launch the application once, then close it.
6. Reconnect to the network.

Things worth knowing

• Always package before handing a job to a printer, missing links are the most common cause of a returned file.
• Set your preflight profile at the start of a job rather than the end, it is the difference between one warning and forty.
• Documents can be exported to an older version through the IDML format if a collaborator is behind.
