About this release

Adobe XD is a screen design tool built for interfaces, which means it optimises for many artboards, reusable components and a fast prototype rather than a single detailed canvas. You lay out screens as artboards, style them with the vector tools, and pull the repeated parts into components that update everywhere when you change the master. For designing an application or a website across dozens of screens, that structure keeps the file manageable.

The prototype mode is what sets it apart from a general drawing tool. Switch from design to prototype, drag a wire from a button on one screen to another screen, pick a transition, and you have a clickable flow you can run in a preview window or share as a link. Component states let a single element carry hover, pressed and disabled looks, and auto animate tweens between two artboards to fake real motion without keyframing anything.

Production features close the loop. Responsive resize keeps a layout sensible as an artboard changes size, repeat grid fills a list from one styled row, and the layout tools export assets and hand measurements and colours to whoever builds the real thing. Plugins extend it into content population, icon libraries and handoff, so it slots into a working design team rather than sitting on its own.

What it does

  • Artboard based canvas built for many screens at once
  • Components that update every instance from a single master
  • Component states for hover, pressed, disabled and custom looks
  • Prototype mode linking screens into a clickable flow
  • Auto animate tweening between two artboards for motion
  • Repeat grid for filling a list from one styled row
  • Responsive resize that keeps a layout sensible as size changes
  • Asset export and developer handoff with measurements and colours
  • Vector drawing and boolean tools for building interface elements
  • Plugin support for content, icons and extended handoff

Changes in this version

  • Faster canvas performance on files with many artboards
  • Improved auto animate smoothness on complex transitions
  • Reworked component state panel
  • Better asset export naming and organisation
  • Smaller install footprint after trimming legacy components

What the package contains

  • Adobe XD offline installer
  • Default UI kit starter components
  • Example prototype for learning the flow
  • All interface languages, selectable during setup
  • Readme with the install order written out step by step

Installation notes

Follow these in order. Most reports of a failed install come from skipping a step rather than from the package itself.

  1. Disconnect from the network.
  2. Pause real time protection for the duration.
  3. Extract to a short path such as C:\Setup.
  4. Run setup as administrator and pick a language.
  5. Let the installer finish, then open the application once.
  6. Close it and reconnect the network.

System requirements

Operating systemWindows 10 version 22H2 or Windows 11
ProcessorIntel or AMD 64-bit processor
Memory8 GB minimum, 16 GB recommended for large files
GraphicsGPU with 2 GB VRAM and DirectX 12 support
Storage3 GB free during install

Things worth knowing

  • Build repeated interface parts as components early, retrofitting them into a finished file is tedious.
  • The cloud sharing features reach out to a service, ignore them and the local design and prototype work still functions offline.
  • Plugins install per user, reinstall the ones you rely on after setting up a fresh profile.

Questions about this title

Is this a drawing tool like Illustrator?
It shares the vector basics but it is built for interface work, so it favours many artboards, components and a prototype over a single detailed illustration.
Does the prototype need any code?
No. You wire screens together by dragging connections and picking transitions. The clickable result runs in a preview with nothing written by hand.
Can developers pull assets from a file?
Yes. The handoff view exposes measurements, colours and exportable assets so whoever builds the real interface can read the spec straight off the design.
Does it work offline?
The design and prototype work is local. Only the cloud sharing and coediting features reach a service, and those are optional.
