About this release

Camera Raw is the engine that processes a raw file before it ever becomes a flat image, and it is the same develop pipeline that the Lightroom family is built on, presented as a plug-in that opens inside Photoshop and Bridge. When you open a raw file it appears first, so exposure, white balance, tone and colour are all set on the full sensor data, and only then does the result pass through to the host application as a layer or a smart object.

The control set is the complete modern one. Exposure and a full tone curve, HSL and colour grading with separate shadow, midtone and highlight wheels, detail with noise reduction and sharpening, a large library of lens correction profiles, perspective transform, and a masking system that detects subject, sky, background and objects so a local adjustment lands where you want it without a hand drawn selection. Denoise cleans a high ISO frame with a detail preserving model.

Because it runs as a smart filter on a smart object, the raw settings stay live inside a Photoshop document, so you can reopen the raw adjustments long after the file has moved on to compositing. Keeping the plug-in matched to the host build matters, since a mismatch is the usual reason a newer camera's files will not open, and this release carries the current camera and lens profile set.

Installation notes

Follow these in order. Most reports of a failed install come from skipping a step rather than from the package itself.

1. Close Photoshop and Bridge before you start.
2. Disconnect from the network.
3. Extract the archive to a short path such as C:\Setup.
4. Run the plug-in installer as administrator and let it complete.
5. Open Photoshop, open a raw file to confirm the plug-in loads, then close it.
6. Reconnect to the network.

System requirements

Things worth knowing

• The plug-in has to match the host application version, a mismatch stops newer camera files opening.
• Denoise leans on the GPU, without a capable one it falls back to the processor and slows right down.
• It is a plug-in, not a standalone program, it opens through Photoshop or Bridge.
