Pro Tools is the digital audio workstation that most commercial studios standardised on, and it is the tool a session player or an engineer is expected to know when they walk into a room. The whole application is built around a sample accurate timeline where audio and MIDI sit together, edits are precise to the sample, and the mixer behaves like a large format console with buses, sends, inserts and automation on everything.

For recording it handles high track counts at high sample rates, punches in cleanly, comps multiple takes into one performance on playlist lanes, and time aligns tracks without artefacts. For editing it is fast and surgical, with tab to transient, clip gain, fades and crossfades that are quick to place, and elastic time for stretching a performance into the grid. The MIDI side drives virtual instruments and hardware alike.

Mixing is where its console heritage shows. Full automation on volume, pan and every plug-in parameter, a routing model that scales from a song to a film reel, and a bundled set of effects and processors covering EQ, dynamics, reverb, delay and more. It reads the industry standard session interchange, so a project moves between facilities, and this is the offline installer prepared to set up in an activated state.

Installation notes

Follow these in order. Most reports of a failed install come from skipping a step rather than from the package itself.

1. Disconnect from the network before you start.
2. Turn off real time protection for the duration of the install.
3. Extract the archive to a short path such as C:\Setup.
4. Run setup as administrator and complete the wizard.
5. Apply the included activation step, then launch once and close it.
6. Reconnect to the network and set your audio interface.

System requirements

Things worth knowing

• Use an ASIO capable interface for low latency, the generic driver adds delay that ruins tracking.
• Keep audio on a separate fast drive from the system, high track counts lean on disk throughput.
• Set the buffer small for recording and large for mixing to balance latency against processing headroom.
