About this release
WhatsApp for Windows is the proper desktop client for the messaging service, a native application rather than a web page pinned to a tab. That distinction matters more than it sounds. It gets real system notifications, it keeps running quietly in the background, it handles file drops and pastes the way a desktop application should, and it does not tie up a browser window to stay connected.
Setup is the familiar link to your phone account, after which your chat history syncs to the desktop and stays in step. From the window you get one to one and group chats, voice and video calling, voice messages, and file sharing for documents, photos and video by dragging them straight in. Notifications land in the Windows notification centre, and the application keeps the conversation in sync across your devices.
For anyone who spends the day at a keyboard, the value is simply typing on a real keyboard instead of a phone, and having files that live on the computer go straight into a chat without emailing them to yourself first. It is a free client, it installs cleanly, and it stays out of the way until a message arrives. It is included here alongside the paid software purely to round out a complete desktop toolkit.
