About this release

Opera is built on the same Chromium engine as the mainstream browsers, so it runs their extensions and renders pages identically, but it bundles a set of features that people otherwise add one at a time. A content blocker for ads and trackers is built in, a free proxy based VPN routes browsing through a chosen region, and a sidebar keeps messenger services, bookmarks and downloads a click away without a tab of their own.

The browsing experience leans into that sidebar and a set of quality of life touches. Workspaces separate groups of tabs so a research session and a shopping session do not bleed into each other, tab islands keep related tabs grouped, and a battery saver mode stretches a laptop charge by throttling background activity. A pop out video player floats a clip over other windows while you work.

This is the standalone offline installer, so it sets up without a connection and lands on a fixed version rather than a web stub that pulls whatever is current. The built in features can be turned off individually if you only want the browser, and extensions install from the usual store for anything the bundle does not already cover.

Installation notes

Follow these in order. Most reports of a failed install come from skipping a step rather than from the package itself.

  1. Extract the archive to any folder, the installer is self contained.
  2. Run the installer, it will set up without needing a connection.
  3. Open the browser and turn off any bundled feature you do not want.
  4. Set the default search and start page.
  5. Disable the automatic updater if you want the version held.
  6. Sign in to sync only if you want settings carried across machines.

Questions about this title

Does it run Chrome extensions?
Yes. It is built on Chromium and installs extensions from the standard store, including the Chrome one.
Is the built in VPN a real VPN?
It is a proxy that covers browser traffic and lets you pick a region. It does not route other applications the way a system VPN does.
Can I turn the extra features off?
Yes, the ad blocker, VPN and sidebar services can each be switched off if you only want the browser.
Why the offline installer?
It sets up without a connection and lands on a fixed version, which suits a controlled or repeatable install.
