About this release

Edge is Microsoft's browser rebuilt on the same Chromium engine that sits under Chrome, which means it runs the same extensions and renders pages the same way while adding the pieces Microsoft layers on top. This package is the standalone offline installer rather than the small web stub, so it sets up on a machine with no connection and lands on a known version instead of pulling whatever is current at the time.

The everyday browser is all here. Tab groups and vertical tabs for anyone drowning in open pages, a built in reading view that strips a cluttered article back to text, collections for gathering research, a PDF viewer with annotation, and profile separation so work and personal browsing keep their own history and sign ins. Extensions install from the usual stores, and settings sync across machines through the account if you want it.

The reason to grab the offline installer specifically is control. It exposes the enterprise policy controls, so the first run experience, the default search, the update behaviour and the telemetry settings can be pinned before anyone opens it. For deploying a consistent browser across a set of machines, or for a build that should not silently jump versions, that predictability is the whole point.

What it does

  • Chromium engine with support for the standard extension stores
  • Vertical tabs and tab groups for heavy multi tab use
  • Immersive reading view that strips articles to clean text
  • Collections for gathering pages and notes on a topic
  • Built in PDF viewer with annotation and form filling
  • Profile separation for work and personal browsing
  • Tracking prevention with adjustable strictness levels
  • Settings and password sync across machines through the account
  • Enterprise policy controls exposed for a pinned configuration
  • Standalone offline installer that lands on a known version

Changes in this version

  • Rebased on the current Chromium security baseline
  • Improved memory handling with very large numbers of open tabs
  • Faster cold start on first launch after install
  • Reworked tracking prevention with clearer per site reporting
  • Refreshed the offline installer to lock the deployed version

What the package contains

  • Microsoft Edge standalone offline installer
  • Both 32-bit and 64-bit payloads
  • Sample enterprise policy templates for a pinned configuration
  • Notes on disabling the automatic updater
  • Readme with the install order written out step by step

Installation notes

Follow these in order. Most reports of a failed install come from skipping a step rather than from the package itself.

  1. Extract the archive to any folder, the installer is self contained.
  2. Run the installer, it will place the browser without needing a connection.
  3. Before first launch, apply any policy settings you want pinned.
  4. Open the browser once and set the default search and start page.
  5. Disable the automatic updater if you want the version held.
  6. Sign in to sync only if you want settings carried across machines.

Things worth knowing

  • Windows ships a copy of Edge already, this offline installer is for pinning a version or deploying it cleanly.
  • The automatic updater runs as a background service, disable it if you want the version to stay put.
  • Policy settings applied before first run stick, applying them afterwards can need a restart to take.

Questions about this title

Does it run Chrome extensions?
Yes. It is built on Chromium and installs extensions from the standard stores, including the Chrome one.
Why use the offline installer?
It works with no connection and lands on a fixed version, which matters for a controlled deployment or a machine that should not auto update.
Can I stop it updating itself?
Yes, the background updater service can be disabled, and there are notes for it in the package.
Will it replace the copy Windows ships?
It installs over the existing copy and updates it to this version rather than sitting beside it.
