About this release

iTop VPN is a straightforward client for putting a tunnel between your machine and the wider internet. Pick a country from the list, connect, and your traffic leaves through that server with your real address hidden behind it. The interface is deliberately simple, one big connect button and a server list, so it stays usable for people who do not want to learn networking to get a private connection.

Beyond the basic tunnel it carries the privacy extras people expect now. A kill switch cuts the connection entirely if the tunnel drops, so nothing leaks out over the open line while it reconnects. Built in ad and tracker blocking trims a lot of the noise off web pages, and a set of protocols means it can usually find one that gets through a restrictive network.

There are server groups tuned for different jobs, general browsing, streaming and downloading, so you are not guessing which one to pick. Split connection rules let chosen applications skip the tunnel when you want local speed for them. The build here is the full client with the server list and the privacy tools available from first launch.

Installation notes

Follow these in order. Most reports of a failed install come from skipping a step rather than from the package itself.

  1. Disconnect from any existing VPN before you begin.
  2. Extract the archive to any folder you like.
  3. Run the installer as administrator, it installs a network adapter.
  4. Approve the network adapter driver prompt when it appears.
  5. Launch the client, pick a location and connect.
  6. Turn off the built in update check to keep the current state.

  • Turn on the kill switch if you care about leaks, it is not always enabled by default.

Questions about this title

What does the kill switch do?
If the tunnel drops, it blocks all traffic until the connection is back, so nothing slips out over the open line in the gap.
Which server should I pick?
Use the group tuned for your task. The client sorts servers into browsing, streaming and downloading so you do not have to guess.
Does it block ads?
It has built in ad and tracker blocking that trims a lot of page noise, though a dedicated blocker is still more thorough.
Why did it install a network adapter?
A VPN needs a virtual adapter to route traffic through the tunnel. Approving that driver prompt is required for it to work.
