About this release

WinZip is the archiver that a lot of people met first, and the Pro edition has grown well past simple zip handling into a small file management workspace. It still packs and unpacks the common formats, but it wraps that in a workspace where the same files can be backed up, shared, renamed in bulk, converted and cleaned up without hopping between separate tools.

The archiving core covers what you expect. It creates and opens zip and zipx, reads a wide range of other formats, and adds strong AES encryption and split volumes for large or sensitive sets. Where it differs from the leaner tools is the workspace around it, with direct connections to cloud storage services so an archive can be zipped and uploaded, or shared as a link, in one move.

The Pro extras are the file management side. A duplicate finder to reclaim space, a bulk rename tool, background backup jobs on a schedule, PDF conversion and watermarking, and basic image tools for resizing and converting a batch of photos. The build here is the full Pro version with all of those modules unlocked from first launch.

Installation notes

Follow these in order. Most reports of a failed install come from skipping a step rather than from the package itself.

  1. Disconnect from the network before you start.
  2. Extract the archive to any folder you like.
  3. Run the installer matching the architecture you want.
  4. Finish the wizard and decline any bundled extras it offers.
  5. Launch once, then reconnect to the network.
  6. Turn off the update check to keep the activation state.

Things worth knowing

  • The workspace bundles a lot of extras, install only the modules you actually want if you prefer it lean.
  • Turn off automatic updating if you want the current version and activation state left alone.
  • For maximum compatibility with other tools, stick to plain zip rather than zipx.

Questions about this title

How is this different from a plain archiver?
The compression is similar, but the Pro edition adds backup, sharing, duplicate finding, PDF and image tools around it as one workspace.
Is zipx worth using?
It compresses tighter than zip, but the recipient needs a tool that reads it. Use plain zip when you are not sure what the other side has.
Does the backup run on its own?
Yes, backup jobs run on a schedule in the background with versioning, so you can roll back to an earlier copy.
Can it encrypt archives?
Yes, with strong AES. As always the passphrase cannot be recovered if you lose it, so store it carefully.
