About this release
BlueStacks 5 puts a full Android environment inside a window on the desktop. Software written for a phone installs into it normally and runs against the desktop machine's processor, memory and graphics card, which is usually an enormous amount more of all three than the phone it was written for had. The result is that things which stutter on handheld hardware run smoothly, and things that were cramped on a small screen get as much space as your monitor has.
The engine underneath was rebuilt for this generation and the difference is mostly felt in how little it gets in the way. Memory use is far lower than the previous line, the instance starts in a few seconds rather than a minute, and it no longer holds on to resources after you close it. You can set how many processor cores and how much memory the instance is allowed, pick a graphics backend, choose the Android version the instance reports, and set a screen resolution and pixel density independently of your actual display.
Input mapping is the part people spend the most time in. Anything designed for touch gets bound to keys, mouse buttons or a gamepad through an overlay editor, so tapping becomes clicking and a virtual thumbstick becomes the usual keyboard cluster. Beyond that there is a multi instance manager for running several environments side by side, shared folders between the Android file system and Windows, a macro recorder for repetitive sequences, and screen recording that writes straight to a desktop folder.

Installation notes
Follow these in order. Most reports of a failed install come from skipping a step rather than from the package itself.
- Enable virtualisation in your firmware setup if it is not already on, everything is far slower without it.
- Disconnect from the network before you start.
- Extract the archive to a short path such as C:\Setup.
- Run the installer as administrator and let it place the engine.
- Launch it once and let the first run configuration finish, which takes a few minutes.
- Close it, then reconnect to the network.

Things worth knowing
- Hyper-V and this engine can conflict on some systems, there is a dedicated build path in the installer if you need both.
- Give an instance at most half your physical memory, over allocating makes the host machine swap and everything gets slower.
- Multiple instances multiply the storage requirement, each one carries its own copy of the Android file system.
