About this release

AOMEI Partition Assistant handles the disk surgery that Windows own disk management refuses to do cleanly. It resizes a partition without wiping it, moves one along the disk, merges two into one, and splits one into two, all while keeping the data in place. For anyone who has ever run out of room on the system partition with plenty of free space sitting in the wrong place, that is the whole job.

The migration tools are the other half of why people install it. It clones a whole disk or a single partition, and it migrates a running operating system to a new drive, which is the clean way to move from a mechanical disk to a solid state one without a reinstall. It aligns partitions for solid state drives, converts between the older and newer partition table styles without data loss, and rebuilds a boot record when a migration leaves a machine unbootable.

This package includes the WinPE bootable media builder, which is the part that matters for the operations Windows will not allow while it is running. You build a small bootable environment, boot into it, and perform the moves, merges and migrations on the system drive from outside Windows where nothing is locked. The recovery side rounds it out with partition and lost data recovery for when something has already gone wrong.

What it does

  • Resize, move, merge and split partitions without destroying data
  • Disk and partition cloning for straight copies to a new drive
  • Operating system migration to a new disk without a reinstall
  • WinPE bootable media builder for operating on the locked system drive
  • Conversion between MBR and GPT partition styles without data loss
  • Solid state drive alignment and secure erase tools
  • Boot record rebuild for machines left unbootable after a change
  • Partition and lost data recovery tools
  • Conversion between primary and logical partitions and file systems
  • Bad sector check and surface test on a selected disk

Changes in this version

  • Updated WinPE build with a wider driver set for current controllers
  • Faster cloning on large drives
  • Improved reliability of the MBR to GPT conversion
  • Better handling of drives with unusual sector sizes
  • Refreshed interface with clearer pending operation review

What the package contains

  • AOMEI Partition Assistant full installer
  • WinPE bootable media builder
  • Both 32-bit and 64-bit builds
  • All interface languages
  • Readme with the install order written out step by step

Installation notes

Follow these in order. Most reports of a failed install come from skipping a step rather than from the package itself.

  1. Back up anything important before you touch a partition, these operations carry risk.
  2. Disconnect from the network and pause real time protection.
  3. Extract the archive and run the installer as administrator.
  4. Apply the included activation step before you launch.
  5. For system drive operations, build the WinPE media and boot from it.
  6. Queue your changes, review the pending list, then apply and let it work.

System requirements

Operating systemWindows 7 or newer, 32-bit or 64-bit
ProcessorAny 1 GHz or faster processor
Memory1 GB minimum, 2 GB for the WinPE environment
GraphicsNo specific requirement
Storage300 MB free plus room for any clone target
MediaA USB stick for the WinPE bootable media

Things worth knowing

  • Always back up before a partition operation, a power cut mid move can leave a volume in a bad state.
  • Operations on the running system drive need the WinPE media, do not force them from inside Windows.
  • Cloning to a smaller drive only works if the used data fits, shrink the source first if needed.

Questions about this title

Can it resize the system partition while Windows runs?
Some operations queue and finish on the next reboot. The safer route for the system drive is the WinPE media, where nothing is locked.
Will migrating my OS to an SSD need a reinstall?
No, that is the point of the migrate tool. It copies the running system to the new drive and sets it to boot, then you swap or reorder the drives.
Is converting MBR to GPT safe for my data?
The conversion is designed to keep data in place, but back up first regardless. You will also need to switch the firmware to UEFI to boot from a GPT system disk.
What is the WinPE media for?
It is a small bootable environment for working on the system drive from outside Windows, where the volume is not in use and can be moved or migrated safely.
