About this release
7-Zip is the archiver a huge number of people install first on any new machine and never think about again. It is tiny, it is free, it is open source, and its own 7z format compresses noticeably tighter than the older zip standard on most data. For anyone shipping or storing large folders, that difference in size is real disk and bandwidth saved.
The reason it stays installed is that it opens almost everything. Beyond its own 7z and the usual zip and gzip, it reads and often writes rar, tar, iso, cab, wim, dmg and a long list of less common formats, so it doubles as the tool that cracks open a disk image or a firmware package when nothing else will. It slots into the right click menu so packing and unpacking is where your hands already are.
It also does the small security jobs quietly. Archives can be encrypted with strong AES so a folder of sensitive files travels safely, the archive can be split into volumes to fit a size limit, and self extracting archives let you hand a package to someone who has no archiver at all. The build here is the current release with the shell integration and every interface language included.

Installation notes
Follow these in order. Most reports of a failed install come from skipping a step rather than from the package itself.
- No special preparation is needed, the package is tiny and clean.
- Extract the archive or run the installer directly.
- Pick the 64-bit build unless you are on old 32-bit Windows.
- Finish the wizard, the right click menu entries appear immediately.
- Open the file manager once to set any format associations you want.
- That is all, there is nothing to activate.

Things worth knowing
- The 7z format compresses best but the recipient needs a tool that reads it, use zip for maximum compatibility.
- Strong encryption is only as good as the passphrase you choose, and there is no recovery if you forget it.
- On Windows 11 the shell entries may sit under show more options, that is the operating system, not the tool.
