About this release

Windows 8.1 Pro is kept in circulation for the machines and the tools that never moved on from it. Some older hardware runs it more happily than anything newer, some line of business software was certified against it and nothing else, and some people simply prefer it. This is the professional edition image at its final servicing state, prepared so setup completes without stopping for a product key and reaches a desktop that is already activated.

The professional edition carries the features worth having on a working machine of the era. BitLocker for disk encryption, Remote Desktop as a host, group policy for real configuration, domain join, and the Hyper-V client for virtual machines. The image keeps the full component store, so the optional features and language packs are present rather than stripped, and the recovery environment is intact.

It installs like any Windows image. Write it to a USB stick or a disc, boot it, and run through setup including partitioning and the choice between a clean install and an upgrade. Both legacy and UEFI boot paths are covered. As an older release its mainstream support has long ended, so it belongs on machines that are isolated or dedicated to a specific job rather than a daily internet facing system.

What it does

  • Complete professional edition image with nothing stripped from the component store

  • Twenty setup and display languages included
  • Boots on both legacy BIOS and UEFI systems

  • Refreshed language pack set
  • Cleaner first boot with less post install work

What the package contains

  • Full recovery environment
  • Notes on writing the image to USB with the common tools

Installation notes

Follow these in order. Most reports of a failed install come from skipping a step rather than from the package itself.

  1. Back up anything you care about, a clean install wipes the target partition.
  2. Write the image to a USB stick of 8 GB or larger, or burn it to a disc.
  3. Boot from the media, choosing the UEFI entry on a machine that supports it.
  4. Pick your language, then choose custom install for a clean setup.
  5. Delete the old system partitions if you are wiping, then select the free space.
  6. Let setup run through its restarts and reach the desktop.

Things worth knowing

  • Mainstream support for this release ended long ago, keep it on isolated or dedicated machines rather than daily internet use.
  • Drivers for very new hardware may not exist for this version, check before installing on a recent machine.
  • Disconnect from the network during setup to keep the out of box experience simple.

Questions about this title

Why install such an old version?
Older hardware that runs it better, or a tool certified only against it. For a general modern machine a newer release is the better choice.
Is the home edition included?
No, this image is the professional edition only.
Can I upgrade in place?
Yes, mount the image inside a running older Windows and start setup, choosing to keep files and applications. A clean install is tidier.
Is it safe to keep online?
It no longer receives security updates, so treat it as an offline or isolated system rather than a daily internet facing one.
