The trimming targets the components an old office or workshop machine never touches, so the base memory footprint after first boot is noticeably smaller and the desktop responds without the disk thrashing that a stock install shows on aging hardware.
The professional edition is still the one to have on a working machine of this era. It keeps the backup and restore tooling, Remote Desktop as a host, the ability to join a domain, and running of older line of business software that never made the jump to a newer Windows. For a shop floor terminal, a lab instrument controller or a machine tied to a legacy peripheral, that compatibility is the entire reason to stay on this line.
The image writes to a USB stick or a disc with any of the usual tools and runs through the familiar Windows 7 setup, including the partitioning step and the choice between an upgrade and a clean install. Both the 32-bit and 64-bit payloads are provided, so the same download covers a very old machine with limited memory and a slightly newer one that can address more.

Installation notes
Follow these in order. Most reports of a failed install come from skipping a step rather than from the package itself.
- Back up anything you care about, a clean install wipes the target partition.
- Write the image to a USB stick of 4 GB or larger, or burn it to a disc.
- Boot from the media, usually the legacy BIOS entry on hardware of this age.
- Choose custom install for a clean setup rather than an upgrade.
- Delete the old partitions if wiping, then select the free space.
- Let setup run through its restarts and finish first boot configuration.

Things worth knowing
- This edition is long past mainstream support, keep a machine on it off the open internet where you can.
- Chipset and graphics drivers should still come from your hardware maker rather than the generic set.
