About this release

This image folds two separate installs into one. The professional edition of the operating system goes down first, and the perpetual office suite is layered on top of it during the same run, so a machine that boots from this stick arrives at a desktop with the word processor, the spreadsheet, the presentation tool and the mail client already sitting in the start menu. For anyone setting up a machine from bare metal, that removes the second download and the second install afterwards.

The operating system underneath is the standard professional edition at the final feature update of the line, with nothing carved out of the component store. The office half is the perpetual release rather than a subscription build, which means it opens documents without checking a licence server first. Both halves land in an activated state, so setup never stops to ask for a key on either one.

The image behaves like any other install medium. Write it to a USB stick, boot it, and run through the normal setup flow including the partition step and the choice between a clean install and an upgrade in place. Both architectures of the office payload are carried in the same image, and the whole thing works from a mounted drive inside an existing Windows install if you would rather not reboot from media.

What it does

  • Operating system and office suite installed together from one bootable image
  • Professional edition with BitLocker, Remote Desktop host and group policy
  • Perpetual office suite with the word processor, spreadsheet, presentation and mail tools
  • Both office architectures present, selectable during the office stage
  • Activated state reached on both halves without a key prompt
  • Full recovery environment left intact on the operating system
  • Thirty eight setup and display languages included
  • Boots on both legacy BIOS and UEFI systems
  • Runs as an in place upgrade from a mounted drive if preferred
  • Rolled up servicing so the first update pass after setup is short

Changes in this version

  • Refreshed servicing baseline folded into the operating system half
  • Updated office payload with the current perpetual servicing level
  • Fixed a stall during the office stage on machines with a leftover install cache
  • Improved driver set for current storage controllers
  • Refreshed language pack set across both halves

What the package contains

  • Bootable image carrying the operating system and the office suite
  • Both office architecture payloads in the same image
  • All setup and display languages
  • Full recovery environment
  • Readme with the install order written out step by step

Installation notes

Follow these in order. Most reports of a failed install come from skipping a step rather than from the package itself.

  1. Back up anything you care about, a clean install wipes the target partition.
  2. Write the image to a USB stick of 8 GB or larger with your preferred imaging tool.
  3. Boot from the stick, choosing the UEFI entry on a modern machine.
  4. Run through the operating system setup and let it reach the desktop.
  5. Let the office stage finish on its own, it continues after the first sign in.
  6. Open the word processor once, close it, then reconnect to the network.

System requirements

Processor1 GHz or faster, 64-bit, with two or more cores
Memory4 GB minimum, 8 GB recommended
GraphicsDirectX 9 or later with WDDM 1.0 driver
Storage40 GB minimum, 64 GB or more recommended
FirmwareLegacy BIOS or UEFI, secure boot supported
Display1280 by 768 minimum

Things worth knowing

  • Disconnect from the network during setup so the out of box experience does not force an account sign in step.
  • Let the machine sit for a few minutes after the first boot while the office stage finishes in the background.
  • Chipset and graphics drivers should still come from your hardware maker rather than the generic set in the image.

Questions about this title

Is the office suite the subscription version?
No, it is the perpetual release. It installs once and does not check a subscription state before opening a document.
Can I install just the operating system and skip office?
The image is prepared to install both together. Skipping the office half is not exposed as an option in this build.
Will both halves stay activated after updates?
Cumulative updates leave the activation state alone. A full feature upgrade of the operating system can disturb it, so pin the version if that matters.
Which office architecture should I take?
64-bit unless you depend on a legacy add-in that only exists in 32-bit form.
