About this release

This is a trimmed build of the professional edition, prepared for machines where the standard install is heavier than the hardware wants. The optional bundled applications and several of the background services that most people never use have been removed, so the running system uses less memory and less disk, and an older or low specification machine feels noticeably quicker than it would on the full image.

The trimming is aimed at weight rather than at removing the parts that matter. The core of the professional edition is intact, so it still installs applications, runs the browser, handles drivers and updates, and keeps the security features that make the professional edition worth having. What is gone is the pile of preinstalled extras and the telemetry heavy services, which is exactly what an older machine does not have the headroom for.

It installs like any other image. Write it to a stick, boot it, and run through setup, which is stripped of some of the out of box nagging as well. It reaches an activated desktop without a key prompt. On a machine with a slow disk and limited memory the difference against the full image is the whole reason a lite build exists.

What it does

  • Trimmed professional edition with optional bundled applications removed

  • Activated desktop reached without a key prompt
  • Application install, browser, drivers and updates all working normally
  • Optional multilingual pack for adding display languages
  • Boots on both legacy BIOS and UEFI systems
  • Recovery and reset options retained

Changes in this version

  • Rebuilt on the final feature update servicing baseline

  • Updated driver set for older storage controllers
  • Improved setup speed on machines with slow disks
  • Fixed a first boot delay on very low memory systems

What the package contains

  • Bootable trimmed installation image
  • Optional multilingual pack
  • Recovery and reset options
  • Notes on writing the image to USB with the common tools
  • Readme with the install order written out step by step

Installation notes

Follow these in order. Most reports of a failed install come from skipping a step rather than from the package itself.

  1. Back up anything you care about, a clean install wipes the target partition.
  2. Write the image to a USB stick of 8 GB or larger with your preferred imaging tool.
  3. Boot from the stick, choosing the UEFI entry on a modern machine.
  4. Pick custom install for a clean setup and select the target partition.
  5. Let setup run through its restarts and reach the desktop.
  6. Disconnect from the network during setup to skip the account nagging.

System requirements

Processor1 GHz or faster, 64-bit

Things worth knowing

  • Because some services are removed, a feature that depends on one may be missing, add it back only if you need it.
  • This build targets weak hardware, on a modern machine the full image is the better choice.
  • Chipset and graphics drivers should still come from your hardware maker rather than the generic set in the image.

Questions about this title

What exactly was removed?
The optional preinstalled applications and several low value background and telemetry services. The core of the professional edition and its security features stay.
Will everything still work?
Normal use does. A feature that leans on a removed service may be missing, which is the trade for the lighter footprint.
Is it worth it on a modern machine?
Not really. The gains show on older or low memory hardware. On a capable machine the full image is the better choice.
Does it stay activated?
Yes, it reaches an activated state and cumulative updates leave it alone.
