Windows 10 Lite

About this release

Windows 10 Lite is the standard system with the weight taken out. The bundled applications, the background services and the telemetry that a lean machine does not need have been removed from the image, so what installs is a smaller, quieter system that boots faster and sits lighter in memory. On older or low specification hardware, where the full install spends its time servicing things you never use, that difference is the whole reason to run it.

The point of a lite build is a responsive machine, not a feature complete one, and the trade is deliberate. Some optional components and the heavier built in applications are gone, and a few management features that only matter on a managed network have been pared back. What remains is a clean desktop that runs the applications you install on it without the background churn, which is exactly what a kiosk, a test bench or an ageing laptop wants.

It installs the same way as any Windows image. Write it to a USB stick, boot it, and run through a setup that has been streamlined so it moves quickly and lands on an activated desktop. Because it is lighter, the install itself is faster and the first boot does not disappear into a long servicing pass. For a machine that needs to be quick and simple rather than everything to everyone, it does the job.

Installation notes

Follow these in order. Most reports of a failed install come from skipping a step rather than from the package itself.

1. Back up anything you care about, a clean install wipes the target partition.
2. Write the image to a USB stick of 8 GB or larger with your preferred imaging tool.
3. Boot from the stick, choosing the UEFI entry on a modern machine.
4. Pick custom install and select the target partition.
5. Delete the old system partitions if you are wiping, then select the free space.
6. Let the streamlined setup complete and reach the desktop.

System requirements

Things worth knowing

• Because components are removed, some features and store applications are simply not present, this is expected on a lite build.
• If you later need a removed feature, it is easier to install the full edition than to add it back here.
• Chipset and graphics drivers should still come from your hardware maker.
